As a university student who doesn’t live on campus, I often get asked what I take in my bag to school with me every day, so today I’m going to share with you everything that’s in my bag!
I’m going to preface this by saying two things:
- I carry around a lot of stuff. This works for me because I drive to campus and don’t have to worry too much about how heavy my bag is. I am, by no means, saying this is a conclusive list of things you HAVE to have but it’s what I carry and find useful.
- Obviously, the things I bring change on a daily basis depending on which classes I have or how long I’m going to be on campus for but the things below are things that pretty much stay in my bag or are things I carry on a daily basis. Other things like textbooks, iPad, binder, notebooks etc change depending on the day which is why I haven’t included them!
Firstly, let’s start off talking about the actual bag. I’m not a backpack girl, yes they’re practical and they’re are plenty of stylish backpacks around but I’m just not a fan. I don’t know why but I just prefer a tote bag. This is why I invested in the Mocha Leather Tote Bag (the one I’ve linked looks the exact same but the inside is completely different, just to let you know!). There were only three things I looked for when buying a bag; it had to have a dedicated pocket for my laptop, it had to be black and it had to be big enough to fit all of the junk I carry around. I can easily say that this bag was a great investment and after two years of solid use, it’s only now starting to show signs of wear and tear on the straps.
A few similar, cheaper alternatives:
The first thing I always, always carry in my bag is my planner. I use a cheap ring-bound planner from Forever New, which unfortunately isn’t available anymore, with Kikki.K inserts. I could not survive without my planner. It has important dates, things I need to remember, blog things, school things, social things, everything. I would be lost without it.
Alternatives (because I know I’ll get asked!):
The second thing that I pretty much always have with me in my bag is my pencil case. I use my laptop a lot but I also like to take handwritten notes, so my pencil case pretty much just lives in my bag – I never take it out unless I need to use it. The current pencil case I’m using is from one of my favourite stationery stores, Typo and has the standard Pilot G2 pens, Mildliners, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners and a few Muji gel pens.
I also always carry around a small notebook. The one that currently lives in my bag is one from ColourHide but I’m generally not too fussed on the kind of notebook it is. It’s mostly just for ideas, little reminders or scrap paper if I’m using my laptop but we need a piece of paper in class for some reason.
Then we get into the obvious stuff – wallet, headphones, phone, sunglasses and glasses, water bottle. Nothing special but essential nonetheless. (P.S top tip, have a pair of headphones that you keep in your bag and only use at Uni, that way you’ll never forget them or accidentally leave them at home!)
Another obvious one – laptop and chargers. I don’t take my laptop to uni with me every day, but it’s in there most days and I’m not gonna lie, it’s probably the reason my bag feels like I’m hoarding a small village inside but it’s pretty essential as a student, so if you’re a new uni student and you’re looking at buying a laptop, my tip here is to forget what’s popular, pretty or cheapest and make sure whatever you buy is light! Just like headphones, I keep a phone charger in my bag. I used to keep a portable charger in my bag but it was a pain to remember to charge the charger, so I went back to the OG iPhone charger and cord. It’s been so useful and there’s normally power points all over campus and in every classroom, so it’s not that much of a hassle to plug in.
I also keep a little makeup bag full of what I like to call emergency supplies. It basically just holds all the little things that I don’t need on a daily basis but are so useful in certain times of need. Inside I have pads & tampons, bandaids, ibuprofen, blister packs, little wipes to clean my glasses, an asthma inhaler, deodorant, hair ties and bobby pins, tissues and some makeup. I probably don’t need to carry it all around but it’s come in handy for my friends when unplanned incidents occur and I can just whip out a tissue or a band-aid.
Gum and mints are also essential to me. You just never know when you might need it, so I always, always carry one or the other with me. On the same kind of note, I also always carry a snack or two, something that’s long lasting, won’t go off it’s forgotten about and is kind of emergency fuel for the days I don’t think will go on so long or the times I get randomly hungry in the middle of a lecture. My go to tends to be a muesli bar or nuts and dried fruit that are sealed in a zip lock bag since they’re a little bit healthy and tend to help you stave off hunger long enough to get some real food. I do pack other snacks on a day to day basis, things like fresh fruit, biscuits (or cookies for all my American readers, haha) and a sandwich tend to be my go to if I’m not buying lunch that day.
And that’s it! That’s what tends to live in my university bag! It seems a bit excessive but I use most of it, if not all of it, on a daily basis. Let me know what kind of things you keep in your university or college bag! While you’re at it, let me know if you’re a backpack or tote person! #teamtote all the way!
