February was a weird month for me, reading wise. I was high on life, having powered through so many books in January and ready to lose myself in so many more amazing stories in February. And then it hit. The dreaded reading slump.
I’m blaming this current reading slump on 2 things:
- The God damn awful fact that February was insanely busy (hence, less time to read).
- Crown of Midnight by Sarah. J. Maas.
Yes, I am partly blaming my lack of reading a single book in an entire month on one book but to be fair, I think I have a good reason. If you follow me on Goodreads or Instagram, you’ll see I documented my love/hate (but mostly dislike) relationship with the first book in the series – Throne of Glass pretty extensively. I had low expectations going into the second book but was keeping an open mind since so many people love and adore the series.
Crown of Midnight sucked. I’m not even sorry to admit it. I really disliked the few chapters I got through. Much like Throne Of Glass, the whole book moves at a snail’s pace. Nothing happens. Nothing at all. There’s no evolving of characters, relationships or even the damn plot. NOTHING HAPPENS*. Just an assassin who does no killing and boringly thinks about boys in a way that doesn’t seem realistic or as if she has any chemistry with anyone lusting after her.
*To be fair, I’m sure something happens eventually. I just couldn’t push myself through to get to it.
I also really dislike Celaena. As if you couldn’t tell. She’s wasted potential. In a book that should be about girls kicking ass and showing the world who’s boss, she’s a pathetic assassin who’s very mary-sue in the sense that everyone freaking loves her and she has no major flaws. It feels less like a fantasy book and more like a romantic fanfiction.
I hated it.
Basically, long story short, my major dislike for Crown of Midnight and the fact that I continued to push myself to read it resulted in the inevitable reading slump. I’m not gonna lie, I could have avoided this by putting COM into the Did Not Finish pile a lot earlier than I did but I was waiting for and hoping something good would finally occur. After pushing the book into the back of my bookshelf, I was looking forward to picking up another book, any other book, and get reading.
But that never happened.
Life got in the way, I got busy and well, I just didn’t want to read. I was officially in the reading slump. Still am if I’m being completely honest, although I am slowly making my way through The One Memory of Flora Banks which I am enjoying (even if I am spending the entire time questioning why a 19-year-old male is in love with a 17-year-old girl who mentally thinks she’s still a preteen) and am hoping to get through by the end of the month. If anything, I’m thinking this reading slump has completely ruined my reading goal for the year but has given me perspective – if you don’t like it, dump it, sooner rather than later!
There you have it! My abysmal book round-up for February! If you have any tips or blog posts about getting through a reading slump let me know because I’m in serious need of them!
Also, apologies to my Throne Of Glass Series lovers for being a complete hater in this post. I’m hoping one day to revisit the series. Maybe.
