The first week of classes is scary enough without having to worry about things you should take with you. That’s why today, we’re talking about the five things I make sure to take to my first week of classes!
I’m sure you’re sick of me telling you the importance of your syllabus but seriously, it’s your ticket to success in university and college. 99/100 times, if you’re lecturer or professor has uploaded a copy of the syllabus online for you to print, you’ll be required to have a copy on you for your first class. I normally print a copy, which I take to class because that’s how I like to do it but having a PDF of it on your computer or iPad works too!
Doesn’t matter if you plan on using technology for note-taking, a pen is always handy. You may be required to mark off attendance, share contact information with someone or to mark a date in you planner or diary. It might also be handy to have a highlighter, for marking important bits and pieces in your syllabus (because let’s face it, the first class is always the tedious and boring syllabus explanation class tied in with some ice-breaker activities).
Look, this is kind of obvious. I mean, most of us don’t leave the house without our phone but I thought I’d add it to the list anyways! Phones are handy things. If you’re early to class you can spare a minute to catch up with friends or your social media feeds, you can check your timetable and if you’re organised, you probably have your life on a calendar somewhere, so if you’re in a class where you’re seeing the syllabus for the first time, you can add the important dates to your calendar!
Also, if you’ve got a super long day, a portable charger should be an essential in your school bag!
Realistically, you shouldn’t go anywhere without your ID. That little card is super handy for discounts! But it’s also necessary for borrowing books from your campus library (which you should totally take advantage of!) and sometimes you may need it to unlock classroom doors. If you’re headed to campus, don’t go without your ID card.
Something to take notes on
Okay, I know I said the first class normally involves that awkward ice-break get to meet your classmates activities and then going over the syllabus but on the odd occasion, you’ll need to take some notes. Whatever you plan on using – Laptop, iPad, notebook, scrap paper, have it handy and ready for your first class!
